 About Us


Le Cuvier, which variously translates from the French as “little barrel room,” or less appropriately “little laundry,” lies a few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean on California's Central Coast. Initially founded by John Munch in 1983, the business grew from a mail-order service to an established micro winery.

John brought Mary Fox on as a partner in 2001, and they established the guidelines that continue to motivate Le Cuvier today. Namely, they decided annual production would remain under 3,600 cases, the wines would be peppered with character, and they would be selectively shared with those who appreciated them.

We strive to maintain these standards each and every day at Le Cuvier. Our esteemed wine club—The Elliptical Society—is the cornerstone of our business and culture. The name plays homage to our commitment to wild yeast fermentation, as native yeast cells naturally form into ellipses. Because we prefer to hand-sell wines directly to our club members and tasting room guests, you will not find our brand in retailers or restaurants. So, why not schedule a visit to our tasting room?
